FAQ

1. What are attars?

Attars - coming from the Arabic word 'itir (meaning fragrance) - are concentrated natural, toxin and alcohol free perfume oils extracted from botanical sources like flowers, herbs, woods, or spices through traditional distillation methods. They form an integral part of the rich tapestry of the ancient cultures of the Middle East and South Asia, going back thou- sands of years. Attars are used for beautification, aromatherapy, and have deep cultural and spiritual significance.

2. What makes them special?

Attars are intimate fragrances with moderate sillage, that are meant for you to smell on yourself or for a close loved one to smell on you. They create a close scent bubble or aura around you. Western perfumes are typically only smelt by the wearer for a short time after application since they tend to project out much further for others to smell.

3. Why the name, Rose & Mantle?

The rose has been one of the most beloved ingredients in numerous societies'perfumery throughout human history. The Damask Rose is one of the most famous rose varieties - cultivated in the Middle East, India, and Bulgaria - and is a symbol of beauty, love, and refinement. The mantle is a piece of clothing wrapped around one's shoulders that gets passed down from an elder to a younger protégé and that is symbolic of the transfer of wisdom and knowledge from one generation to the next. We picked the name Rose & Mantle to show our love for the rose and in a nod to our founder's Damascene roots, as well as to highlight the deep respect we hold for the wise people of the past and their rich olfactory traditions of healing and beautification.

4. How is an attar applied?

Pull the wand out of the bottle and wipe it on your pulse points - wrists and behind the ears
- as well as on the collar bone and neck. Then rub what was applied on the wrists and the neck across the arms and neck. This will allow the attar to last longer as it sits on pulse points, where blood vessels are closest to the surface and the skin is warmer. These areas help diffuse the fragrance more effectively.

5. Do attars last longer than mainstream Western perfumes?

Typically, yes. The main reason is that attars are made from highly concentrated oils primarily derived from natural sources such as flowers, herbs, woods, or spices. They are also alcohol-free which means that they don't evaporate as quickly as Western alcohol-based perfumes do.

6. Are attars sensitive skin and allergy friendly?

Yes, they can be more gentle on sensitive skin and for those with allergies, compared to Western perfumes. As attars are alcohol and paraben free, they are less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions. However, it's worth noting that some individuals might still be sensitive to certain natural oils, such as jasmine, rose, or sandalwood, which are common in attars. If concerned about allergies or skin sensitivities, its best to try a small amount of the attar before using it more liberally.
